Freedom Friday: Fear of the Unknown


Have you ever been afraid of doing something you’ve always wanted to do, but you hadn’t because of fear of the unknown? Feel trapped and stagnant because you’re afraid to make a move? The acronym for F.E.A.R. is false evidence appearing real.

Oftentimes, we talk ourselves out of doing things we know we were called to do, helping others in need, thinking the lack of money or timing isn’t right, or things we dream of doing in general because of all of the excuses we make as to why it won’t work versus finding opportunities as to why it will. We come up with a thousand and one scenarios in our head about things that hadn’t even taken place for fear of thinking that’s how it’s negatively going to turn out instead of looking for a positive outcome.

I’ve found most people are afraid to make a move or take a risk for fear they might be successful in doing so and have to keep up with the appearance and the makings of success. Being successful does take a lot of hard work. No one ever said it would be easy. The easiest thing you can do is quit, but you’ll never know what success feels like unless you try.

Sometimes, God will make you uncomfortable within your situation or will close the door for you. It’s because you won’t do it yourself or you can’t see that new doors are being opened for you to walk through. You’re too busy standing behind the old one which is blocking your vision and from you carrying out your purpose.

The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Power, love, and a sound mind. What a powerful and winning combination!

What would you do if you knew on the other side of that very door you were afraid to open and walk through was your pathway to freedom? He’s given you the tools….power, love and a sound mind. So, why not use them?

Phillipians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

He has given you the strength to accomplish anything you want out of life, but you speak and think negatively against it.

Faith, not fear, is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Once you build up your faith, you have to put in the work.

Speak to it. Think positively about it. Work daily in faith. You have the power to see it through.

Proverbs 16:3
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Jeremiah 29:11-13
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Psalms 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Didn’t you know that the Lord loves and cares about you? What is it that you love to do? Are you currently doing them? Walking in your purpose? What are you afraid of?

He knows every strand that’s upon your head. He has a plan for you. One that will propser and not harm you, but we quickly give up on those plans because it doesn’t seem, look or feel right. We get impatient. He came that you may have life and life more abundantly.

Commit your plans to Him, take delight in Him while doing what it is that you love, and walk in your purpose. He will give you the desires of your heart. He loves you. You have to trust and believe in Him that He knows what’s best for you.

Sound Mind.
Phillipians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The mind can be a daily battlefield due to life’s busyness and circumstances. It can truly get to the best of us, but if you think positively and look for gratitude in each day, you can overcome whatever obstacle that comes your way. He said to find the good in each day and focus on those things. If you’re too busy focusing on what’s going right in your life, you won’t have time to see what’s going wrong.

It’s a blessing to wake up each day with the ability to think and do for yourself. He has mentally equipped you to do whatever it is you were called to do or want to do. Ask Him for the strength, wisdom and guidance to place one foot in front of the other in walking towards your destiny.

Want to start a business, buy a house, lose weight, start a fitness regimen, eat better, get married, go back to school, become debt free, etc.?

Ask yourself, “I wonder how many things I could accomplish, if I wasn’t aftaid.” That’s where freedom lies. You have the keys to the door. Open the door. Cloak yourself in faith with works. Walk through. Don’t look back. Now, go and get it.

  2. Yes! Great blog. I’ve done so many things I was afraid to do that it’s now second nature for me to run to the scary things.

  3. I so love this! I just started taking swimming lessons because I decided to face my fears. Mind you I’ll be 55 next month lol. That being said , I still struggle with going to class but at least I’ve taken the first steps. Thank you for this great article!
